Obsidian is an amorphous form of volcanic glass that forms under extreme heat and pressure deep inside Earth’s crust. Obsidian is composed mostly of silicon dioxide (SiO2) and aluminum oxide (Al2O3), with lesser amounts of magnesium oxide (MgO) and potassium oxide (K2O). Some varieties also contain iron oxides and other minor elements. Obsidian is often black in colour but is sometimes greenish blue or pale yellow. Obsidian is very hard, durable, and strong. It is used in sculpture, jewelry, and weapons.
